Standing Together: How OSSTF BUSS Members Can Support Our Colleagues Through Red for Ed

Solidarity is at the heart of the labour movement. As members of OSSTF’s (BUSS) unit, we know that the strength of our union lies not only in our own collective voice, but in how we show up for our brothers and sisters across the education sector.

One simple but powerful way to demonstrate that solidarity is by participating in Red for Ed.

What is Red for Ed?
Red for Ed is a visible, collective action where education workers wear red to show unity and support for publicly funded education and the workers who sustain it. It’s a longstanding symbol of solidarity across unions, representing a shared commitment to fairness, respect, and strong public services.

When should we wear red?
Members are encouraged to wear red on designated solidarity days—most commonly Fridays, unless otherwise communicated by your local or provincial leadership. These coordinated days help amplify our collective voice and make our support visible across campuses and communities.

When supporting our colleagues in CUPE and other partner unions, members may also choose to wear purple, a colour often associated with CUPE solidarity actions. Paying attention to current labour actions and calls from fellow unions ensures our support is timely and meaningful.

Why does it matter?
Wearing red (or purple) may seem like a small gesture, but it carries real impact. It sends a clear message: education workers stand together. Whether colleagues are in bargaining, facing workplace challenges, or advocating for better learning and working conditions, visible solidarity reminds them they are not alone.

For BUSS members, this is an opportunity to support not only fellow OSSTF members, but also education workers across sectors—custodial staff, administrative professionals, early childhood educators, and many others who play vital roles in our institutions.

A Collective Commitment
Supporting Red for Ed is about more than a colour—it’s about standing up for one another and for the future of education. As OSSTF BUSS members, our solidarity strengthens the broader movement and reinforces our shared values of equity, dignity, and respect.

So, wear your red on Fridays (or purple when called upon), start conversations, and stand proud in the knowledge that even small actions can help build a stronger, more united education community.

Together, we are stronger.
