Supporting Dignity: OSSTF BUSS Period Promise Campaign Returns
This year, OSSTF BUSS is once again proud to support the Period Promise Campaign in partnership with the United Way and the Niagara Regional Labour Council (NRLC). As we lead up to the Annual General Meeting (AGM), members are encouraged to come together in solidarity by donating menstrual products to help address a critical but often overlooked issue in our communities: period poverty.
How to Donate
Members can contribute by dropping off donations at:
- The Registrar Office
- Custodial (MCG 204)
- Or by arranging a pick-up with Emily
Donations will also be accepted directly at the AGM. Every contribution, big or small, helps make a meaningful difference.
What is Period Promise?
The Period Promise campaign is a United Way initiative focused on ensuring that everyone who menstruates has access to essential hygiene products. These items, such as tampons, pads, and menstrual cups, are basic necessities, yet many individuals struggle to afford them.
Through community-driven donation drives, products are collected and distributed to local agencies, schools, shelters, and food banks, helping those who need them most.
But Period Promise is more than just a collection campaign. It also works to:
- Raise awareness about period poverty
- Reduce stigma around menstruation
- Advocate for equitable access to free menstrual products in public spaces
Why This Campaign Matters
1. Period Poverty is Real—Even in Canada
Nearly 1 in 4 people who menstruate in Canada have struggled to afford period products.
This means many are forced to choose between buying essential hygiene items and paying for food, rent, or other necessities.
2. It Impacts Education, Work, and Well-Being
Without access to proper products, individuals may miss school, work, or daily activities.
This creates barriers to success, limits participation, and can lead to feelings of isolation and embarrassment.
3. It’s About Health and Dignity
Menstrual products are not optional—they are essential for health and hygiene. Lack of access can lead to serious health risks and emotional stress.
At its core, Period Promise is about ensuring dignity for all.
4. The Need is Growing
With rising costs of living, more individuals and families are struggling to afford basic necessities—including menstrual products. These items are also among the least donated but most requested at shelters and food banks.
A Collective Effort for Change
Campaigns like Period Promise show what is possible when communities come together. In Niagara alone, hundreds of thousands of products have been distributed through United Way partnerships, directly supporting individuals in need.
By participating, OSSTF BUSS members are not only providing essential supplies—they are helping to break stigma, promote equity, and support the health and dignity of people across our communities.
Take Action
As we approach the AGM, we encourage everyone to participate:
- Pick up an extra box of period products during your next shopping trip
- Drop off donations at designated locations or at the AGM
- Help spread awareness among colleagues and friends
Together, we can make a real difference—because no one should have to choose between basic hygiene and other essential needs.
Let’s support Period Promise. Every donation matters.
