Celebrating 40 years at Brock

Celebrating 40 Years: Linda’s Journey at Brock University

This year marks a remarkable milestone: 40 years of dedicated service by Linda in the Registrar’s Office at Brock University. Since starting as a Records Assistant at just 18 years old, Linda has become a cornerstone of the department and a beloved colleague to many.

“I wrote my final high school French exam on a Saturday,” Linda recalls with a smile, “and started working at Brock the following Monday!”

Over the past four decades, Linda has played a vital role in supporting students throughout their academic journey—from the moment they’re admitted to the day they graduate. “Records oversees everything in between,” she says. “There’s far too much to write down!”

Throughout her time at Brock, Linda has witnessed—and embraced—tremendous change. “We started with no computers,” she explains. “Registration used to happen in the gym, with instructors manually signing students into classes. Then we moved to telephone registration, and now it’s all online. The evolution has been incredible.”

She’s also seen the campus transform, with new programs, departments, and buildings shaping the university’s future. But what stands out most for Linda are the people: “I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many interesting and kind individuals—faculty, staff, and students from all walks of life. And I’ve formed friendships that span the full 40 years.”

One of her fondest memories involves a colleague, Shirley Kallies, who retired many years ago. “Shirley always took the bus to work, so on her last day, we rented a city bus, called it ‘Shirley’s Bus,’ and surprised her by picking her up from her home. She was shocked—and delighted. It was so much fun. She’s since passed away, but that memory still brings a smile.”

Outside of work, Linda finds joy in her faith, family, and the great outdoors. She and her husband Dave—her best friend and husband of 38 years—have five daughters, two sons-in-law (so far, she jokes), and eight grandchildren, with one more on the way.

“We love camping—tents and pop-ups only! No glamping for us,” she laughs. “We love enjoying God’s creation, being in nature, and spending time together as a family.”

As a Christian, Linda lives by the words: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength—and love your neighbour as yourself.” It’s a principle that has guided both her personal life and her professional career.

Looking ahead, retirement is on the horizon, and Linda hopes to spend more time with her family and serving in her church community. She also takes a moment to recognize the important role of the OSSTF BUSS (Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, Brock University Support Staff).

“Thank you to the current OSSTF BUSS for all the work you do for us. My advice is simple: remember the ‘little guy’—the important work they do, and how we all matter. When we work as a team, we can go far.”

Thank you, Linda, for 40 incredible years of service, dedication, and kindness. Your legacy is felt in every student’s journey and in the hearts of everyone lucky enough to work alongside you.
