Supporting Women, Strengthening Our Union

OSSTF/FEESO has always believed that unions have a vital role in supporting members facing workplace sexual harassment, intimate partner violence, or abuse. As part of this commitment, OSSTF/FEESO is proud of the Women’s Advocate Program — a crucial initiative aimed at helping members navigate these serious challenges.
We are pleased to share that Mary Montgomery and Emily Hammond have recently completed the training and are now certified Women’s Advocates for OSSTF BUSS. Please join us in congratulating them on their dedication to supporting our members and building a safer, more inclusive workplace community.
What Is the Women’s Advocate Program?
The Women’s Advocate Program was developed to offer support to members who are experiencing, or have been impacted by, domestic violence, sexual harassment, or other forms of abuse. It recognizes that employers are not the only ones responsible for creating safe workplaces — unions also have a key role to play in this effort.
Women’s Advocates are not counsellors. They are specially trained OSSTF/FEESO members who volunteer to assist their colleagues by:
- Providing confidential support and a listening ear
- Helping members access workplace supports and community services
- Offering guidance on how to navigate difficult situations related to violence and harassment
This initiative is a powerful example of union solidarity and our ongoing commitment to member well-being.
What Can You Expect from Mary and Emily as Women’s Advocates?
As certified Women’s Advocates, Mary and Emily are equipped to:
- Support women in our bargaining unit by helping them understand their options
- Refer members to appropriate resources without judgment
- Promote awareness of violence prevention and healthy relationships
- Work in confidence — everything shared with an advocate is private unless the member consents otherwise or safety is at risk
Their work strengthens our union and ensures that no member has to face violence or harassment alone.
