Q. 1 – What is the difference between educational assistance and tuition waiver?
A. 1 – Educational assistance refers to fees being waived for the employee. Tuition waiver refers to fees being waived for the employee’s spouse or child.
EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANCE
To be eligible to apply for educational assistance, the member must be a permanent employee at the time of confirmation of registration. This includes members whose job type is recognized as Permanent Full Time, Permanent Part Time or Permanent Seasonal.
Conditions:
i. Educational assistance is for Brock undergraduate and graduate credit courses only. Audited and non-credit courses are not included.
ii. The waiver of tuition covers the cost of tuition only. Ancillary fees are not included and must be paid at confirmation of registration.
iii. Where the member is permanent but less than full time (i.e. eligible for 80%, 70%, 60%, or 40% tuition benefits), they will be required to pay the difference in tuition costs at the time of confirmation of registration.
iv. In order to maintain the privilege of educational assistance, the member must be promoted and/or pass the course(s) in which they are enrolled.
v. Should the member not successfully complete a course or withdraw from a course, they will be required to pay the tuition or withdrawal fees in order to re-establish the privilege of educational assistance prior to their next confirmation of registration
Q. 2 – What is the difference between a credit, non credit and audited course?
Credit VS. non credit/ audited
A credit course has a course weight associated with it. Normally a half credit course (a P, Q, or V course) will have a 0.5 credit, and a full credit course (F course) will have 1.0 credit. Courses are offered in a variety of modes, terms and durations. Most courses in the Course Calendar are eligible however if you are unsure, contact the department or if you have access, you can run a timetable from Brock DB and it will indicate what the course is weighted as.
Non credit courses are usually designated as 0 level courses (like BOOST (BOST 0N00) or STEP (STEP 0N00), or co-op courses (designated with a C)
Auditing a course means that no credit or assessment of performance will be given in the course.
Q. 3 – What is the difference between tuition fee and ancillary fee?
Tuition fee is the cost of the course only. Ancillary fees are charged per credit and are mandatory and governed by an Ancillary Fee Protocol established between Brock University and BUSU or GSA. These non refundable fees include: recreation, athletics, student union operations, levies, etc.
Choosing a credit!
Brock offers many for credit degrees, certificates, micro-certificates and minors. Check out the Course Calendar and look for ” Degrees, Certificates, Micro-Certificates and Minors” in the table of contents.
You can also take credits on their own as non degree credits.
